Menilik Square

The monument of Emperor Minilik ll was ordered to be built by Queen Zewditu in memory of her father’s victory at the battle of Adwa. The square is located outside the main gates of St. George Cathedral and is close to City Hall. The monument was designed by an architect from German. The Queen was dead before the monument was erected. The crown prince Emperor Hailesilasse inaugurated the erection of the monument before he was crowned as a king of Ethiopia. Ever since then people in Addis Ababa celebrate Adwa /Victory day/at Menilik II square. The monument was removed when Ethiopia has occupied the fascist forces from 1936-1941. And it was returned to its place when the Italians subdued and left the country.
