Chbera Churchura National park

Chebera Churchura national park is found on the western side of the central Omo Gibe basin, in between the Dawro zone and Konta Special Woreda of the SNNPRS, Ethiopia. The Park is fortunate in possessing numerous rivers and streams and four small creator lakes (Keriballa, Shasho, Koka) which are the reason for the rich wildlife resources of the area. So far, 37 larger mammals and 237 species of birds have been recorded in the different habitats (Highland & Riverine forest and savanna and bush lands) of the park. White-cliff chat, banded-barbet, wattled ibis, black-headed forest Oriole, and thick-billed Raven are endemic birds for the country. Common mammals include the African elephant, hippopotamus, Cape buffalo, lion, and leopard. Currently, CCNP appears to be the least disturbed and reliable ecosystem for the African elephant and Buffalo in the country.

What to See?

The chebera Churchura national park is one of the best-preserved ecosystems in Ethiopia. The park keeps an important portion of wilderness and biodiversity. Mammals like the African elephant, hippopotamus, Cape buffalo, lion, and leopard can be easily spotted.  Currently, Chebera Churchura National park appears to be the least disturbed and reliable ecosystem for the African elephant and Buffalo in the country.

Chebera Churchura National park is best accessed from the town of Jimma (325 km from Addis Ababa). Ethiopian Airlines has a daily scheduled flight from Jimma. Then from Jimma, you can drive to Chebera Churchura on the Chida-Ameya road by renting a private car in Jimma. You can also bring your own car from Addis Ababa which will help you to visit the Ghibe valley en route to Jimma. The road from Jimma to Chbera Churchura national park is a 120 km gravel road.

There is no lodging facility at chebera churchura national park. The only option is camping. Bring all the necessary camping materials and food items with you if you plan to stay overnight.
